Event: Intermediate/Advanced MTN Bike Ride: Gray Butte

Let’s ride the Gray Butte loop! The Gray Butte, abutting Smith Rock, offers spectacular views. On a clear day you can see forever, or so it seems. Rain will cancel this ride because apparently Gray Butte area has soil that, in wet conditions, gloms onto tires and clogs drive trains.

For more info, contact Kelly Vonruden at kellya@me.com or cell 603-660-4708. I’ll be the ride “coordinator” … we’ll take turns leading.

When:  Friday, May 18th

Ride Details: This ride will be in a remote area, so please bring enough water, food and clothing to get you through 9.6 miles and 1481 feet of climbing. This loop ride circumnavigates Gray Butte in the counterclaim direction starting from Skull Hollow. From there we will pace ourselves on a long steady climb up a dirt forest road,. Next we’ll dip onto fun single track. Along the way there’s a fantastic rocky perch where we can have a snack and enjoy incredible views of the Cascades. Continuing onward expect some rollers before we hit a switch back decent which can be tricky, but easily walkable. Further on down expect more rollers before descending more steeply on loose gravel.

Midway down the decent IF the group is feeling EXTRA energetic, we can continue descending Grey Butte Trail until we reach Burma Road where we can soak in a gorgeous view of the Smith Rock area and beyond. The energetic part of this side trip is that we retrace part of our route uphill before hooking up with single track heading back down to Skull Hollow. This option will add almost 5 extra miles and 475 ft climbing. No pressure! TBD.

All riders have an obligation to the ride coordinator to let her know if they are leaving the ride. Bella rides are “no drop” rides. No one will get left behind unless they choose to cut a ride short, want to go faster than the group or take a different route. When you leave the group, you are on your own.

******Be sure to bring your signed waivers if you are not a Bella’s member. Non-members are welcome on their first ride without a membership but must sign this waiver and give it to the ride leader before the ride. Please note that this privilege may only be used once – you must become a member before attending your second Bella ride.
