Strong Intermediate ROAD Bike Ride: Aufderheide Byway: Fellas Invited!
Bellas, Fellas and friends of Bellas are invited to join Catherine and Rod as they ride the scenic Aufderheide Byway.
Aufderheide Drive was named after Robert Aufderheide, the Willamette National Forest Supervisor from 1954 until his death in 1959. Previously known as Forest Road 19 and sometimes called the “Box Canyon Road”, Aufderheide Byway is said to be one of Oregon’s most beautiful and lightly traveled roads. The highway consists of paved roads which carve a path through scenic forests, the historic logging community of Westfir, the Constitution Grove, Box Canyon Guard Station, the Aufderheide Memorial, Cougar Reservoir and the McKenzie Highway.
The byway follows the Middle and North Forks of the Willamette River, up Box Canyon and down the South Fork and main fork of the McKenzie River.
When: Wednesday, June 21 Ready to Roll at 10:00 AM
Where: Plan to meet Catherine and Rod at the Office Bridge Park next to the covered bridge in Westfir at 10:00 AM (map). Allow at least 3 hours travel time from Bend.
There are many lodging options in Oakridge and the Westfir Lodge (info) is right across the street from the ride start. There is an RV park in Westfir near the start of the ride and another in Oakridge as well as campgrounds nearby. Those spending Tuesday night please plan on meeting at the Mazatlán Mexican restaurant (map), 47720 School St., Oakridge at 7pm. Wednesday night plan on post ridge celebrations at the Brewer’s Union in Oakridge.
Ride Details: This is a strong intermediate to advanced ride, but since it is out and back, one can turn around at any point and it is mostly downhill back to the park. The ride climbs gradually for 32 miles before it makes a switchback and climbs steeply for two miles to the top of Box Canyon.
You can see details of the ride here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/21647919. This ride is 61 miles with 3300 feet of elevation gain/loss.
This ride is for strong intermediate/advanced riders due to length and elevations. The rider should be able to ride long distances with increased elevation gain and loss.
All riders have an obligation to the ride coordinator to let her know if they are leaving the ride. Bella rides are “no drop” rides. No one will get left behind unless they choose to cut a ride short, want to go faster than the group or take a different route. When you leave the group, you are on your own.
